From antiquity to modern times, acts of heroism have become synonymous with Greek epics. One such epic struggle is the “Epic of 1940” known worldwide as “OXI” Day, referring to the 28th of October 1940, when then Prime Minister of Greece, Ioannis Metaxas, rejected Italy’s ultimatum for Greece to surrender, which resulted in the humiliating defeat of the would-be invading forces.
That is why, on the 28th of October, Greeks around the world observe the day with festivities and celebrations, to honor their ancestors and pass down the heritage of their heroics to the next generations.
The Greek National Anthem
Our Live Online Classes students learn about the 28th of October celebrations in Greece by listening to Greek songs and watching videos about the Epic of 1940. To celebrate “OXI” Day, this year we created a video and a printable about the Greek national anthem. The Greek lyrics come with an easy-to-understand translation in English, for kids to grasp the meaning and importance of each verse of the “Hymn to Liberty” by Dionysios Solomos. Furthermore, the video features epic images of Greeks fighting for freedom throughout history, for kids to gain an impression of the context in which their ancestors fought for freedom.
